Logbook for Sailors

Quick & Easy

What is this app for?

The app collects data on a travel (A-B-C-D-E, etc.) and related trips (A-B). So a trip covers the entire travel, a trip is a part of it. As soon as you have docked on Monday and leave early on Tuesday, you start a new trip on Tuesday to the next destination. You have only one ship per trip and only one crew. During this trip you have to do different things. First, some on-board components should be checked (bilge, seacocks, etc.), then the weather is checked, then cast off, then sailed or motored, then laid out or anchored. During the trip, the weather may change. Every drastic change should be entered in a logbook. But many skippers do not always do this just in time (and when they then maybe they do not know everything anymore). And here is the approach of the app. It is equally useful for skippers who want to keep their logbook digitally or manually on paper. If you do not want to do without the paper form, this app offers the possibility to record the data while driving. After the trip, you can then calmly transfer or send the previously digitally recorded and stored data in paper form. What is no longer in memory can be taken directly from the app. The handling quick & easy, can take place, was aware of any frills such as GPS tracker and unne- cessary entries omitted. The key component of the app is the backup of log files to send to an external storage (email, cloud). Because it must be ensured that the data are also externally retrievable and printable, if your phone is bathing, but you should show a document in front of the naval court.

System Requirements

The app has been tested on: Huawei P30 Pro (Android 9) Huawei P10 (Android 9) Samsung Galaxy S6 (Android 7) HTC One M8 (Android 6) Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (Android 7) Tablet Lenovo Tab 7 (Android 7.1.1)

Required accesses

The app requires access to the GPS, the memory and the microphone (you can save special incidents by voice). Please allow these accesses, otherwise no logfile can be written.

Enter data

During a trip you maybe call several times the menu item "Travel - Trip" and enter the respective changes. The pre- vious data is displayed again and can be accepted or simply overwritten. Because with the ship you might drive the next trip and maybe the crew did not change until then. If you can not leave a page with saving, that's because you did not have all the neces- sary Fields completed. Please complete the data in the orange input fields.

Menu

Via the menu all pages of the app can be reached. As soon as you press the menu but- ton in the pages "Ship" and "Crew", you change to the menu WITHOUT saving the data you have just entered. Only in the "Trip" page, when pressing the menu button extra queried again, if you really want without storage back to the menu.

Vessel

The ship data is entered at the beginning of a cruise and cannot be changed afterwards. It can only be re-entered when a new travel is created. Only the tank content and the approximate average consumption can be changed as soon as the button "Refuel Reset" is triggered on the menu page. Incidentally, tank content is the amount of fuel stored in the tank, not the total volume of the tank. The log status is also recorded here and is automatically adopted in the trip window. You can put a decimal place with the dot (comma does not work when entering). The dot is then converted to a comma at the output. The log status can only be increased upwards and not subsequently changed.

Air pressure, temperature

In the page "Trip" you can set informations about the current temperature and the air pressure. Often these values are not available at the moment. With an internet connec- tion, it is possible to download these two values for the current location. All you need is the symbol be pressed. The two data are provided free of charge through openweathermap.org.

Magnetic Compass Course

You can manually enter the value or, if you click on the compass rose, you can see an approximate value via the compass sensor of the mobile phone (if your cell phone is equipped with it). To calibrate the compass, please use the instructions of your mobile phone manufacturer.

New travel - new trip

A new trip is created by clicking the correspon- ding button on the "Trip" page. The start time of the new trip begins when you click this button. Clicking again saves the time at the trip destina- tion.

Refill

If you have refueled, then you have to perform a reset on the menu page. This will reset the consumption values. Then you will be taken to the ship's page, where you can enter how much you have refueled and if your average consumption has changed.

Analysis

The app calculates all the miles driven under sail and engine. Also, it calculates the approximate (!) fuel consumption for a cruise. The calculation is based on the values you entered for the approximate average fuel consumption, the number of engine hours run and the contents of the tank. The values are always calculated when the engine is switched off again. You can save the analysis either as a JPG image or as a Word document. A file named "evaluation_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.jpg or doc" is created and in the folder "download" or "downloads" in internal main memory (not SD card). The xxx represent the date and time.\r\n\r\nIf the folder "download" or "downloads" does not exist in the internal memory, it must be connected to an external application, e.g. a file manager.

Travel Report

After completing a travel, a new travel must be created via the menu. Previously, you have the opportunity to view a travel report. This can also be saved on the device as a Word file. A file with the name "travelreport_xxxxxxxx.doc" will be created and stored in the folder "download" or "downloads" in the internal main memory (not SD card). The xxx represent the storage date. If the folder "download" or "downloads" does not exist in the internal memory, it must be connected to an external application, e.g. a file manager.

E-Mail Address

The field is not required, but useful. If you intend to send logfiles by e-mail, the e-mail address will automatically be entered as recipient.

How to save

The creation of a logfile is done simply by pressing the button "Save logfile" at the bot- tom of the Trip page. If you go back with the Menu-Button or the Return-Button of your mobile phone, no log- file will be generated. When pressing the "Save logfile" button, a logfile named "logbook_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.doc" will be created in your "download" or "downloads" folder in main memory (not SD card). If the folder "download" or "downloads" does not exist in the internal memory, it must be generated with an external application, e.g. a file manager.

Export

The log files and evaluations can be found in the internal memory of your mobile phone in the folder "download" or "downloads". They are available there in the format "log- book_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.doc" or "evaluation_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.doc or jpg". It was deliberately used the Microsoft Word DOC format, so that the files can later be edited manually. That would be a bit cumbersome in PDF format. There are two ways to send the files. Either directly from the logbook app via Gmail or using a file manager installed in the phone. 1. By e-Mail You need to have Google Gmail installed on your phone. If you do not have Gmail, you can download it at the Google Playstore. After installation, you can either use your Gmail account in Gmail or set up an account with your regular email address. It does not matter which provider the reci- pient is. In general, you are the recipient yourself. Pressing the button "E-Mail" in the menu page shows maybe the message "The file could not be attached". This does not mean anything to us and can be ignored (it may be related to a Google security setting). When you click on the paperclip, you can attach one or more files. It then opens automatically the folder "download" in which your log files are located. 2. By file manager If you do not want to or can not use Gmail, you have the possibility to an already installed file manager on the phone to send the files to a cloud, but also to send by e-mail. Navigate in the internal memory (not SD card) to the folder "download" or "downloads" and you will find the log files and evaluations there in the format "log- book_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.doc" or "evaluation_xxxxxxxx_xxxx.doc or jpg".
